Novell v3.11 PCN driver README File
With the release of NetWare v3.11, Novell has adopted and
standardized the IBM PCNII media frame type on the 3.11 server.
NetWare 2.x fileservers supported two PCNII media frame types - the
IBM PCNII and the Novell PCNII.
NOTE: In order for your NetWare v3.x server to
communicate with other fileserver/bridges
or workstations on your PCNII network
segments, you must make sure that all
fileserver/bridges and workstations on each
segment are configured using the IBM PCNII
media frame type.
CHECKING MEDIA FRAME TYPE ON THE NETWARE 286 FILESERVER/BRIDGE
To determine what media frame type your NetWare 286
fileserver/bridge is currently using, type CONFIG at the
fileserver/bridge console. If you see the message "PCN II &
Baseband Lansup Support Prg Compatible" listed, then you are running
the IBM media frame type and will not need to make any changes to
that server/bridge. Otherwise, if you only see "PCN II & Baseband
(version)" then you must reconfigure that fileserver/bridge
UPDATING THE NETWARE 2.0X OR NETWARE 2.1X SERVER
If you have determined that you are NOT currently using the IBM
Media Frame Type (See section above), then you must re-create the
NetWare 286 operating system and use the PCNIIL lan driver that came
with your 286 NetWare. This is done by using the Novell NETGEN
utility. Refer to your NetWare installation manual for additional
information on how to perform this function.
CHECKING MEDIA FRAME TYPE ON THE WORKSTATION
Locate the NetWare shell files (IPX.COM and Netx.COM) on your DOS
workstation. From the directory where these files are located, type
IPX I. If you see the message "LAN Support Pgm Driver", then you do
not need to make any changes to this workstation. Otherwise, if you
only see "PCN II & Baseband (version)" then you will be required to
also update the NetWare shell files on that workstation.
UPDATING THE WORKSTATION NETWARE SHELL
If you determine that you need to update the NetWare shell on the
workstation, obtain the DOS ODI workstation kit. This kit is
available as part of the NetWare v3.11 product, from Novell as a
separate kit, or the files from this kit, contained in the file
called DOSODI.ZIP in NOVA forum 8, may be downloaded from
Compuserve (normal Compuserve connect fees and telephone tolls will
apply). Since the DOS ODI drivers are "modular" you do not need the
Novell SHGEN utility to create the driver.
